Learning golf near Montreal, close to the Laurentian Mountains

I have always wished to learn golf. I just did not know where and how I start. In one summer, while studying in Montreal, I accidentally saw a notice of golf courses, and after some hesitation, I signed up for it. It was a one-day course for beginners, held in the beautiful surroundings of Quebec nature that attracted me to gain experience in this game.

The course took place in Club de Golf St-Jérôme, distant only 30 minutes driving from Montreal, the highway 45 west, which is close to the Laurentian Mountains, one of the oldest mountain ranges in the world. Approximately 15 participants of different nationalities enrolled in the course; few French Canadian-born students and arrivals from Latin America, North Africa, Russia and Poland. We came to the Club on Saturday about 10 o’clock morning. In the Club, a French-Canadian coach welcomed us, dressed in the golf style with a light sporty hat. In the course, we were mostly beginners. Only few participants have completed a similar course before.

Learning Golf

The coach was friendly with a sense of humour, which encouraged us driving away the initial fear of beginners in an unknown game. First, he gave us golf sticks and then he explained the theory, movements, golf swing with sticks, golf balls, and game rules. Then each participant received a basket of balls and we learned to bounce balls with help of the coach. If we flicked the ball incorrectly, the instructor asked us to repeat it correctly.

When we used out all balls in the basket, and got tired, we went to a nearby restaurant where we got refreshment and shared first impressions of golf. As the course went on, in the second practical part, we split into two groups. Those who wanted to try mini golf, and those who chose a real golf in the field. I chose the latter group. We walked around the meadows and forest with lakes. Sometimes we hit balls for more than 200 meters and then we could not find them.

The route was long, maybe 8 km, and those who had not been used to do sport, after some time, were tired. But we all came to the finish, where colleagues from the first group were waiting and taking photos of us in the final game.

After the golf, we made barbeque and rested in a charming golf countryside. We had a great feeling that we finally tried golfing. It’s a really cool game, and especially, if the ball is hit as far as possible. That encourages even more to go on golfing. In addition, golf can serve as an opportunity for binding additional contacts, both personal and  business ones.
